WHY SHOULD YOU ADVOCATE????
Only you know what is best
for yourself or the person
that you love!
Because if you do not
advocate for yourself and
your family...then, who will?
You are the only expert
about you and your family!
Only you know what you
want until you tell it to others
The professionals may
have read about it but, you
have lived it!
If you are not part of the
solution...then you are part
of the problem!

Why we no longer use the "H" Word
Removing the "stone of madness." Seventeenth-century engraving by Jean-Baptiste Vrints. While the patient's wife
protests, the quack surgeon wearing a necklace of stones removed from other patients operates on an old man.
Hanging on the wall are additional "stones of madness" that the quack has collected. The caption above the print
reads: "With this brain surgery an old man mistakenly eradicates a healthy passion." The footnote below the print
reads: "To an old man love is an inhuman torment, concealing madness. Here is my forehead. Come with your skilled
hand and remove this demon from my mind."
DR. BENJAMIN RUSH'S "TRANQUILIZER CHAIR" (1811)
The most complete restraint of a patient's every move ever devised. A board attached to the back of the chair which is made to
rise and fall according to the height of the patient. To the end of the board is attached: A wooden box lined with stuffed linen in
which the patient's head is held immobile so it cannot move backward or forward, nor incline to either side. Chest and belly
bands, made of flat pieces of strong leather, which confine and limit the body's movement in the chair. Strong leather bands
which confine the arms and hands of the patient to the arms of the chair, thereby limiting their movement. Pieces of wood which
protrude slightly from the chair to which the patient's feet are confined, so as to prevent their moving in any direction. A
stool-pan (half-filled with water) attached so as to be drawn out from behind the chair and emptied and replaced, without
removing or disturbing the patient. The chair is fastened to the floor so as to remain stationary. (Three Hundred Years of
